Rutgers New Brunswick/Piscataway Campus

Community Planning Initiatives and Projects

In addition to managing campus wide construction projects, University Facilities represents the interests of Rutgers University during the planning and construction phases of projects located on campus boundaries which have an impact on campus life.  Conversely, campus projects which may impact our neighboring communities are planned with input from our residential community leadership.  The University Facilities Manager of Community Projects, spearheads this initiative, coordinates the partnerships and acts as liaison between all groups ensuring that all parties are kept abreast as projects move from conception, to development and finally construction.

Currently, the university is involved in three community projects that are in various stages of planning and development.

 The Greening of College Avenue

The goal of this project is the conversion of College Avenue, a city-owned street, into a more welcoming, pedestrian-friendly public space lined with university historic academic buildings.

Background:    An international design competition was launched and after an exhaustive search and interview process, five finalists were selected to prepare conceptual designs for the College Avenue campus.  After public lecturers and exhibitions, a jury of representatives from the Rutgers community and architecture, landscape design, and urban planning professionals announced TEN Architectos as the competition winners.

Today:   TEN Architectos continues to develop the final College Avenue greening design as well as develop construction schedule.

Next Steps:   Construction is slated to begin ______________

 Livingston Campus Redevelopment

The Livingston Redevelopment project involves the examination of the campus physical assets and its alignment with the Rutgers University Academic Vision.

Background:    Historically, the Livingston Campus served as the residential and the academic home of the former Livingston College.  With the devolution of Livingston College and the formation of the School of Arts and Sciences, this campus is poised for redevelopment.  As the university develops its academic vision and long term goals for the Livingston Residential Campus, successful partnerships with neighboring community leaders have been established.  Adult learning communities complete with market-rate residential and retail establishments are just some of the redevelopment ideas designed to add vibrancy to this campus community.

Today:   Ayers Saint Gross and Jones Lang LaSalle, architectural consultants continue to work with university representatives in developing the programmatic and educational vision for the university as well as conduct outreach surveys in the neighboring communities for the Livingston Residential Campus.

Next Steps:   A final report will be unveiled early 2008.

 The Gateway Project

In a collaborative effort between Rutgers University, the City of New Brunswick, and the New Brunswick Development Corporation (DEVCO), a new building, serving the needs of all groups, is in the planning stages for the corner of Easton Avenue and Hamilton Street, New Brunswick.  This landmark development will include space for a new Rutgers University 44,000 square foot Bookstore that will replace the existing Bookstrore at the Ferren Mall as well as space for University Press and for a satellite Visitor’s Center.

Background:    In anticipation of the demolition of the Ferren Deck/Mall, the University entered into discussion with the City New Brunswick regarding this shared project.  New Brunswick will occupy all but 50,000 square feet of space.  This ideal site offers the University with premium visibility for a State-of the Art Bookstore at the New Brunswick Train Station.

Today:             Preliminary planning and project development is underway.

Next Steps:      A building Groundbreaking is anticipated for Fall 2008.
